The Way Mcewan Portrayed Women Essay, Research Paper

See the manner in which McEwan portrayed adult females through his female characters

Every female character within the novel is connected through Stephen. The chief female characters are portion of Stephen & # 8217 ; s private life ; these are the people with which Stephen is closest to throughout the Novel. The minor characters are the females, which Stephen interacts with throughout his public life.

Julie, Stephen & # 8217 ; s married woman and Thelma, a close friend both have really different characters, they both represent the functions of modern females within our society both these characters go against the position proposed of the authorities.

McEwan has expressed both their characters as being highly strong and independent in their ain ways. However some facets of their characters seem to suit some of the authoritiess proposed positions of adult females. An illustration of this is that both adult females have highly strong maternal inherent aptitudes. Although Thelma ne’er has kids of her ain, she diverts her fussing inherent aptitudes to Charles.

Stephens & # 8217 ; s female parent is one of the few adult females within the novel that fulfils the authorities & # 8217 ; s image of adult females within society. However she is from another coevals, a coevals where adult females are to stand by and back up their hubby. McEwan nevertheless manages to show Claire & # 8217 ; s strong and independent character through the pub scene Claire goes against her hubby and decides non to hold an abortion.

& # 8220 ; She was an uneven mixture of shyness and independency & # 8221 ; This could be bespeaking that this is how McEwan sees all adult females. Claire merely begins to carry through the traditional adult females & # 8217 ; s function when she marries Douglas.

Throughout the fresh McEwan seems to esteem and look up to the maternal and caring inherent aptitudes of adult females. Mc Ewan manages to show these feelings through his authorship without looking negative towards work forces within the novel and work forces in general.

Two of the three minor female characters are both members of the authorities commission. We don & # 8217 ; t acquire much information about their background or their lives but the reader gets the general thought of them from their names, & # 8220 ; Miss Rein & # 8221 ; Rein being the Gallic word for nil. A

lthough McEwan has assigned a negative name for a ground I believe it

Not to be because in his eyes adult females like Miss Rein are nil but because he believes in the authoritiess eyes she is seen as nil.

& # 8220 ; The room had one time been a broom closet & # 8221 ; The authorities

See her non to be worthy of a proper office but alternatively give her a broom closet.

& # 8220 ; Miss Rein sat less than four pess off staring at Stephen with proprietorial admiration. He smiled back uncomfortably and lowered his regard & # 8221 ;

Miss Rein is carry throughing the feminine image of adult females being coquettish and diffident, while Stephen is being typically male by take downing his regard.

The other adult female on the commission Tessa Spankey, described as a

& # 8220 ; Large adult female with pregnant chads at the base of each finger. Her face was dual chinned and friendly, all lentigos and crows feet. & # 8221 ; McEwan uses initial rhyme in this description this gives a soft flow and doesn & # 8217 ; t sound harsh. Tessa Spankey is besides described as holding a maternal regard

& # 8220 ; She took attention to include each member in her maternal regard & # 8221 ; Her name has a sexual mention, it sounds absurd this could bespeak that Stephen and the remainder of the commission see her as a gag. Throughout the novel Stephen & # 8217 ; s view on political relations is rather negative this name is non directed specifically at adult females but at the commission in general this is suggested by the fact that there is besides a male character referred to in this paragraph called & # 8220 ; Colonel Jack Tackle. & # 8221 ;

The other minor female character is a cab driver. This adult female is another illustration of the modern independent adult female although she is still described as maternally,

& # 8220 ; The cab driver was a friendly motherly adult female who insisted on fixing his seat belt for him & # 8221 ;

This seems to propose that Stephen is believing that even though she is taking a potentially male occupation she still has the same female motherly inherent aptitudes.

These three child characters, I feel are Mc Ewan & # 8217 ; s manner of stating society that adult females should non be treated in this manner and should be treated like the possible kid carriers that they are.
