As Reflected in Classical Mythology

The Greco-Roman society was a really patriarchal society. This is reflected throughout the myths in classical mythology. By looking at the authoritative mythology we will see that the functions adult females portrayed are really different than adult females & # 8217 ; s functions in today & # 8217 ; s society. Although there are a few similarities to adult females & # 8217 ; s functions in today & # 8217 ; s society, their functions are more like those adult females in the past. We can see this by looking at the properties of Greco-Roman female Gods and looking at the functions adult females play in the myths. By comparing the functions of adult females in the myths with adult females & # 8217 ; s functions today we will see that the functions have many differences and few similarities.

The first things we will look at to demo adult females & # 8217 ; s functions reflected in Classical mythology are the properties of the female Gods. Of the 14 chief Olympic Deities, merely six of them are adult females. This includes Hera, Hestia, Demeter, Artemis, Athena, and Aphrodite. Of these six I believe Hera, Demeter, and Aphrodite best portray the function of adult females in Greco Roman society, as reflected in Classical mythology

The Olympic Deity who best shows the function of adult females is portrayed by Greek Mythology is Hera. Hera is the goddess of matrimony, childbearing, and consort of Zeus. She stays at place and presides over the household all twenty-four hours while her hubby goes around doing love with every other beautiful miss in Greece. This indicates that in Greco-Roman society the adult females would remain at place to watch over their kids, clean the house, weave, and do the repasts. This could be looked at as being really similar to the functions of adult females in the early to mid twentieth century, but is different than the functions of adult females in today & # 8217 ; s society. Woman in today & # 8217 ; s society are no longer expected to remain at place and ticker over the house and place. Most adult females today have occupations and portion the housekeeping and cooking with their hubbies. In add-on, if a adult female finds out today that her hubby has been kiping about on her and holding kids with many other adult females she can take him for every thing he & # 8217 ; s got. Lashkar-e-taibas merely state Zeus wouldn & # 8217 ; Ts have that that Crown or bolt of lightning throwster any longer in today & # 8217 ; s society.

Another Olympic Deity who helps demo the function of adult females in Greco-Roman society was Demeter. Demeter is the goddess of grain and birthrate. Demeter controls the harvests and the devising of kids. I think that Demeter showed adult females & # 8217 ; s functions as nurserymans and the idea at the clip that it was the adult females & # 8217 ; s making that determined whether she would acquire pregnant and which sex it would be. This is different than today & # 8217 ; s society because today horticulture is shared among males and females and we know that it is really the males X or Y chromosome that determine the sex of a kid.

Aphrodite is another Olympic Deity who helps demo the function of adult females in Greco-Roman society. Aphrodite was the goddess of sexual desire. I think this showed that adult females in this period used work forces & # 8217 ; s want to acquire things they wanted. In one myth Aphrodite got Zeus to alter himself into a swan ( Hughes, Lecture ) . Now, who & # 8217 ; s supposed to be the most powerful God? This is really similar to the function of adult females in today & # 8217 ; s society. Women normally use work forces & # 8217 ; s desires to acquire them to make what they want them to. The large difference is that in today & # 8217 ; s society many adult females give into the work forces and portion in desire with them before they are married while in the Greco-Roman society really few adult females had prenuptial dealingss. Womans who were non virgins were normally ne’er married and sold into slaves by their male parents ( Powell 34 ) .

Another manner to look at the function of adult females in Greco-Roman society, as reflected in Classical Mythology is to look at adult females & # 8217 ; s functions within myths. Several myths that help explicate adult females & # 8217 ; s functions in Greco-Roman society are The Folktale of Pandora, Theseus and Hippolytus, The narrative of Penelope, and the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. All of these myths help to demo the functions of adult females in the Greco-Roman Society.

The folk tale of Pandora is one myth which helps demo the function of adult females in the Greco-Roman society. The narrative of Pandora is one that shows how work forces found themselves superior and blamed

adult females for the jobs of the universe. In the narrative Prometheus offered Zeus something that looked good but was bad on the interior. In return Zeus offered him something that looked good on the outside but was filled with prevarications, cheats, and other bad behaviours ( Powell 115 ) . To do a long narrative short, Pandora opened the jar and made the good life turn into labour, wretchedness, and disease, with decease in the terminal. I think that this showed that the Greco-Roman society blamed adult females for all of their jobs. I think that this is different than the women’s function in today’s society. I think that work forces are blamed more for the jobs of today. Even though you and I both know they’re largely the mistake of adult females.

The narrative of Theseus and Hippolytus is another myth that shows the function of adult females in Greco-Roman society. In this narrative Hippolytus rejects Aphrodite to follow Artemis. In retaliation, Aphrodite makes Hippolytus & # 8217 ; mother Phaedra autumn in love with him. Phaedra, unable to command her sexual desire, makes her travel on Hippolytus. After he rejects her, she hangs her ego and leaves a note stating that Hippolytus raped her. When his male parent Theseus returns he kills him. This narrative shows that the Roman-Greco society thought adult females were filled with prevarications and the cause of many bad things. This is different than adult females & # 8217 ; s functions in today society because today it is normally thought that more work forces lie to avoid problems and confrontations.

Another myth that helps explicate the functions of adult females in the Classical clip period is the narrative of Penelope. This is portion of the narrative of the Odyssey, by Homer. In this narrative Odysseus won Penelope & # 8217 ; s manus in matrimony in a pes race. After they had been married for a short period of clip Odysseus is sent away to the Trojan War. To do a long narrative short Penelope delaies for Odysseus for ten old ages, maintaining off suers by run uping a robe by twenty-four hours and undoing it at dark ( hypertext transfer protocol: //hsa.brown.edu/maicar/Biographies.html ) . First of all this myth shows that during the Classical clip period adult females were looked upon as awards that can be won by competitions of accomplishment. Second, it shows how during this clip period adult females were expected to wait for eternal Numberss of old ages for at that place husbands to return. This is different from adult females & # 8217 ; s functions in today & # 8217 ; s society. Womans are no longer won in competitions of accomplishment and are no longer expected to wait for an eternal figure of old ages for their hubby to return. Now there are even adult females in the wars.

The Homeric Hymn to Demeter is another myth that helps explicate the function of adult females in the Classical clip period. In this myth Zeus gives off his girl Persephone to Hades. Because of this her female parent Demeter is so disquieted that she does non let the harvests to travel. To salvage the human race Zeus has Hades give Persephone back. But before she returns to earth she has a Punica granatum seed, intending she must divide clip between the underworld and Earth. This is the cause for the changing of the seasons. This myth shows how the male parents chose whom their girls married during the Classical clip period every bit good as faulting a adult female the seasons when harvests will non turn. This is different than the function adult female drama in today & # 8217 ; s society because although it is still common for a male parent to give away his girl at nuptials, male parents in our society seldom choose whom the girl will get married.

The Greco-Roman society was a really patriarchal society. This is reflected throughout the myths in classical mythology. By looking at the authoritative mythology we see that adult females & # 8217 ; s functions portrayed in myths are really different than their functions in today & # 8217 ; s society. In authoritative mythology adult females are thought of as homemakers who stay at place and preside over the households. They are expected to make what work forces say even to the extent of get marrieding whomever their male parent chooses. They are ever at mistake for the universe & # 8217 ; s jobs and are ne’er thought to be equal to work forces.

Women & # 8217 ; s functions in today & # 8217 ; s society are far different from this. They are no longer looked upon merely to preside over place and household, they are non forced into matrimonies, and they are non blamed for all the universes jobs. Today & # 8217 ; s society is non a patriarchal 1. In today & # 8217 ; s society adult females are looked upon as equal to work forces doing it more equalitarian compared to the Greco-Roman society.
